Gender Is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC)
The Gender Is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) Network is a prominent coalition of African women’s and civil society organizations, coordinated by Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS) since its inception. Established in 2002 in Durban, South Africa, GIMAC serves as a strategic advocacy platform that engages with the African Union (AU) and other institutional partners to promote gender equality and women’s rights across the continent.
As the coordinating entity, FAS plays a central role in organizing GIMAC’s biannual pre-summit consultative meetings held ahead of each African Union Summit. These meetings bring together civil society actors and AU Member States to advance discussions on women’s issues, priorities, and policy recommendations.
GIMAC’s work is structured around the thematic areas of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (SDGEA, 2004), including human rights, governance, peace and security, economic empowerment, education, and health, and it also addresses emerging challenges such as climate change.
Under the coordination of FAS, the GIMAC Network has become a key voice for gender advocacy in Africa, contributing to policy dialogue, monitoring implementation of regional gender instruments, and strengthening the influence of civil society in continental decision-making processes.
